This remarkable antique armor was made in the city of Augsburg as part of a whole set of armor around 1548/49 by the gunsmith Matthäus Frauenprice The Elder and the engraver Jörg Sorg The Younger.
This armor is called "Königsgarnitur", which means "Royal Headset".
It was made for Emperor Maximilian II on the basis of his order and consists of many individual parts that can be combined in a modular system to form armor for use on horseback, on foot, for field, tournament and foot battles.
The armor shown is a combination of pieces for a peaceful duel, or a German tilt, or "stechen". On the left side of the "Stechküriss," called the armor combination for this sporting purpose, is a lattice plate providing ultra-stiff steel protection to withstand the impact of the spear.
Crossed steel combs are made to catch the tip of the spear and provide a reliable blow, which was the main goal of this tournament discipline. The famous engraver Jörg Sorg Jr. also made drawings of this typeface in his book with samples of armor, which, among other things, served as a book with samples for new customers. This armor is 5 feet 8 inches (173.5 cm) tall. It is kept as part of the #hofjagdundruestkammer @kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna (inv: A 610) collection and was photographed during an absolutely magnificent exhibition #IronMenKHM.
The standard Luftwaffe dirk of the second model had a steel blade and a length of 25.5 to 26.5 cm. The head and cross were made of cast aluminum or alloy, some can be found with an anodized finish. In the center of the head was a gilded swastika surrounded by oak leaves. The color …
