Historical Background:

The Afghan saber (pulwar) is a type of saber common in Afghanistan in the 18th and 19th centuries. The blade of Afghan sabers is not too different from similar Iranian and Indian blades, but the hilt is entirely made of steel. In the ornamentation of Afghan sabers one can see clear echoes of the culture of neighboring countries. The scabbards, blades and hilt are decorated with engraving and notching. Flowers and petals can be seen in the patterns – these are traditionally oriental elements of ornamentation, as well as curls and shells – a borrowing from Europe.

Pulwars have a similar origin to the sabers of neighboring countries. Initially, the weapons of ordinary people in Afghanistan were salawar-yatagans, while the wealthiest classes could afford imported swords from Persia or India, which influenced the design of the pulwar.

Afghan saber is close in design to the Indian talwar, but has a more pronounced chisel, bent on both sides towards the blade transverse guard, and the tip has a disk-shaped shape, like the talwar, but resembles a bowl.

The curved blade of the pulwar gave it efficiency in combat, allowing it to make quick and powerful strikes. Afghan pulvars were used both in combat and for ceremonial purposes, emphasizing the prestige and status of the owner. Made of high quality materials and decorated with skillful engravings, they are a testament to the high skill of Afghan gunsmiths.
