The Afghan Saber Type 2 is a traditional Afghan sword known for its distinctive design.
This saber features a steel blade that is single-edged and slightly curved, narrower than that of the “Bukhara Type 1 Saber.” A single, fine fuller runs along the blade towards the spine, and gold inlay depicts the protective symbol known as the “Chicken’s Paw.”
The handle consists of two overlays made of wood and horn, secured to the broad tang with three steel rivets, under which silver or iron washers are placed. These overlays occupy two-thirds of the handle.
The head of the handle is adorned with small, elegant “ears.” The upper third of the handle is often made of iron or sometimes silver, attached to the tang either by soldering or welding. Steel plates may run along the back and belly of the handle. The handle fits snugly into leather-covered wooden scabbards, leaving only the head of the handle exposed, similar to Caucasian sabers.
The scabbard is wooden, covered in black leather, and consists of a metal throat and two mounts, with a movable ring and cup secured at the bottom.
The Afghan saber, particularly the Type 2 variant, reflects the rich martial traditions of Afghanistan, where such weapons have been used for centuries in warfare and ceremonial contexts. These sabers are not only functional but also serve as symbols of status and craftsmanship.
