Offered for sale the original general military dirk sample 1951, which was a mandatory attribute of officers of the land forces and aviation of the Bulgarian People’s Army. This dirk was adopted at the same time as the naval dirk and exactly repeated its blade, but had its own unique features in the design of the scabbard and equipment.

Historical note:

Dirks of the 1951 model were produced in socialist Bulgaria for both army and naval officers. They symbolized membership in the officer corps and retained design elements inspired by pre-war traditions. The military reforms of the socialist period affected the uniforms and accessories, making them practical and expressive. After the end of the socialist period, many such dirks appeared on antique markets in Europe.

Design and features:

  • Blade: Polished steel with double-sided sharpening.
  • Hilt: The gasket between the blade and hilt is made of red velvet (sometimes black leather was found).
  • Scabbard: Of sheet iron, chromed or nickel-plated, decorated with bronze details. At the mouth of the scabbard is engraved heraldic lion of Bulgaria on the background of the rising sun. On the reverse side is the image of the Party House of the Bulgarian Communist Party.
  • Equipment: The movable rings of the scabbard are connected by chains of round links, which are attached to the waist belt through a rectangular bar with a carabiner.

Parade belt:

The officers’ belt of the Bulgarian People’s Army is made of silk thread of golden or silver color with an inner lining of cotton. The design repeats the traditions of pre-war tsarist belts, evolved from European samples.

Award variants:

General military dirks of the 1951 sample could have engraving on the scabbard, emphasizing their status in the award version. Such copies were presented in wooden cases, lined with velvet, but did not stand out as separate models.

Market and fakes:

Original dirks of this sample are still considered popular in antique markets. It is important to note that fakes of such dirks have not been identified, but there are artifacts assembled from parts, with the addition of fake symbols.
