The 1867 Swiss cavalry broadsword was the official melee weapon of the cavalry of the Swiss Army from 1867 to 1905. It was used by dragoons, hussars and cuirassiers. History: After the end of the Crimean War in 1856, the Swiss Army began the process of modernizing its weapons. One of the innovations was the adoption of a new cavalry sword. The sword of the 1867 model was developed on the basis of the German sword of the 1848 model.
Usage: The 1867 model sword was used by the cavalry of the Swiss Army during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. It was also used during the First World War. Replacement: In 1905, the Swiss cavalry was re-armed with sabres. The sword of the 1867 model was withdrawn from service, but some samples of this weapon have survived to this day.
Today: The 1867 Swiss cavalry broadsword is a collector’s item. This broadsword can be seen in some museums in Switzerland.
