The artillery saber is an example of cold weapons made in Germany for export to the United States. It consists of a blade, hilt, and sheath. The saber has an elegant design with a rich decorative finish, which emphasizes its military purpose and belonging to artillery units.
Detailed description:
Blade:
– Material: Nickel-plated steel.
– Shape: Single-bladed blade with one broad chisel.
– Decor:
– On the heel of the blade there is a Star of David and the inscription “Proved”.
– The main part of the blade is decorated with floral ornament with a geometric cartouche in the center. In the cartouche is the inscription: “CPT ALFRED C. Mossop ist Bn “M” 114 Inf 1971”.
– Also depicted is the symbol of the United States – an eagle with open wings, two crossed cannons and military banners, indicating that it belongs to artillery units.
– On the other side of the blade in five is the inscription “Made in Germany” and “AMERICAN MILITARY SUPPLY CORP. NEW YORK.”
– The center portion of the blade is decorated with floral ornamentation, military trophies and the inscription “US”.
Handle:
– Material: Brown colored plastic.
– Design: The handle has four grooves for a comfortable grip.
– Garda: Made in the form of a semi-oval bowl with three shackles, which are attached to the main part of the garda. There is a cutout in the upper part of the guard for attaching the lanyard.
– Hilt: A screw that allows the saber to be disassembled.
Scabbard:
– Material: Metal, nickel-plated.
– Construction: The scabbard has two sheaths with movable rings for hanging. At the end of the scabbard there is a boot.
This saber is an example of an edged weapon made in Germany for the American market. In the 19th and early 20th century, Germany was one of the leading producers of weapons that were exported to many countries, including the United States. Artillery sabers were part of the equipment of officers and soldiers of artillery units, and were also used as parade weapons.
The inscription “CPT ALFRED C. Mossop ist Bn “M” 114 Inf 1971” indicates that the saber may have belonged to Captain Alfred C. Mossop of the 1st Battalion ‘M’ 114th Infantry Regiment. This makes it a valuable historical artifact associated with a specific individual and unit.
