This Klevets is not just a weapon, it is a piece of history, restoring the image of brave warriors of the past.

Historical Background:

Klevets, also known as Kelep or Chekan, is a type of cavalry battle hammer-axe used by Zaporozhian Cossacks in the 17th century. The weapon had a narrow blade and was mounted on a short holder, often attached to the front bow of the saddle or on the belt. The klevets was effective in close combat, allowing the Cossacks to deliver deadly blows to their enemies.

The weaponry of the Zaporozhian Cossacks was extremely diverse, including firearms, cold and throwing weapons, both of their own manufacture and trophy weapons obtained in battles with Poles, Muscovites, Turks and Tatars. An important place in the arsenal of the Cossacks was occupied by keleps, the findings of which were confirmed by archaeological excavations at the site of the battle near Berestechok.

Ukrainian folklore has preserved numerous references to the kelep, confirming its importance in the culture and military tradition of the Cossacks, in particular in such lines: “And a Cossack knows the Cossack custom, touches his ribs with a clover…..
