Scabbard are wooden, covered with black leather. The mouth of the scabbard is decorated with an etched image of the Coat of Arms of the USSR on the front side, and two crossed palm branches on the reverse side. The nut and tip are decorated with etched floral and geometric patterns. The device of the scabbard is brass, gold-plated.
A rare card, today there are about two dozen real examples in state and private collections.
A special uniform for diplomats was introduced by Order No. 213 of NKID dated October 7, 1943. Both the gray casual and black dress uniforms included a coat, suit (uniform or jacket, trousers, waistcoat), cap, gloves, shirt, tie and shoes.
The ceremonial uniform, which was made of more expensive materials with gold stitching, was accompanied by a kortik “in a black leather scabbard with gilded metal trim.” It was worn “on a black rapeseed portupee with a velvet lining.” The handle of the diplomatic knife was made of yellow plastic. On the front side of the scabbard there was an image of the Coat of Arms of the USSR, and on the back – the emblem of diplomats, a symbol of peaceful intentions: two palm branches made of gilded metal, crossed and tied with a ribbon.
According to some information, the last accessory of the diplomatic outfit was introduced on a personal initiative Joseph Stalin.
This uniform did not last long. After Stalin’s death in July 1954, it was canceled. All that remained was the uniform for ceremonies in accordance with international diplomatic protocol.
Diplomatic Dagger of the USSR is a flagship weapon with which Soviet diplomats and officials were awarded for outstanding services to the state. It was also called “the dagger of the diplomatic corps.” Kortyk was a symbol of prestige and was highly valued by the recipients.
It was usually presented in a special case together with a certificate of recognition. Kortyk was designed in the traditional Soviet style, with a straight blade and a decorative gilded handle. For individual orders, the handle could be decorated with precious stones and complex engraving, and the blade could be engraved with symbols of the Soviet state, such as a sickle and a hammer. The Soviet diplomatic jacket was usually worn with official clothes and used during diplomatic ceremonies and events. Today, the Diplomatic Card of the USSR is a very popular and rare collectible, valued for its historical significance and intricate design. Despite its limited distribution, a number of specimens have survived and can be found in private collections and museums around the world.
