Dear collectors and visitors of the Antique Gallery website, seeking a gift, particularly antique weapons, we present to you:
Blade made of steel, curved, single-edged, with one wide fuller.
The manufacturer’s mark is not preserved on the blade’s tang.
Clarification: This saber features a blade from a soldier’s Dragoon saber from the First World War. During the First World War, due to a shortage of blades, officer hilts were fitted with soldier’s saber blades (with one fuller), a historically confirmed fact.
Hilt consists of a grip with a pommel and a brass guard. The grip is made of ebonite, with deep transverse grooves and a thickening in the middle. At the top of the grip is a decorative brass ferrule, topped with an oval pommel shaped like a rosette. The ferrule is adorned with floral ornamentation and the monogram of Emperor Nicholas II, under whose reign one of the weapon’s owners received their first officer rank, after which the saber could have become a trophy.
At the bottom of the grip is a brass ferrule. The guard is formed by a single front quillon, which extends from the pommel and, curving smoothly, transitions into a narrow crossguard, the end of which is bent toward the blade and has a round hole for attaching a lanyard. In the central part, on both sides, the front quillon is decorated with high-relief cast images of a wide belt and laurel branches in linear framing, extending from it in both directions (upward and downward).
Scabbard is wooden, covered with black leather. The brass fittings consist of a throat, a nut, and a tip. The throat has a bracket on the inside, and the nut has a ring. The blade is made of steel, curved, single-edged, with one wide fuller.
The manufacturer’s mark is not preserved on the blade’s tang.

The saber model of 1881, also known as the “Dragoon Saber,” was a cold weapon used by Ukrainian military forces during the First World War. It was employed as a cavalry weapon as well as by infantry in close combat.
The First World War: The 1881 saber was used by Ukrainian regiments of the Russian imperial army, as well as by Ukrainian formations fighting for Ukraine’s independence, such as the Ukrainian People’s Army.
The following text is taken from the book “UKRAINIAN ARMIES 1914-55.”
Private, Horse Regiment of the Black Zaporizhzhia, 1919. This vibrant regiment was formed in 1917 and established a reputation for both its daring and bravery. It clashed with Denikin’s white forces in Kyiv in August 1919, leading to the expulsion of Directorate troops from the city. During the winter of 1917-18, the black-hatted soldiers wore black or gray Cossack uniforms and small fur hats with extremely long black flaps. During the Hetmanate period, they wore standard cavalry uniforms, but during the winter of 1918-19, after the fall of the hetman, they managed to obtain supplies of black and light gray cloth and returned to their old uniforms. Unfortunately, there was no opportunity to replenish their supplies, so by the end of the year, they (like most Ukrainian units) were in tatters.
The Dragoon Officer’s Saber Model 1881/1909 is an outstanding example of military weaponry from the Russian Empire. Dragoons were a special type of cavalry that combined the skills of mounted and foot soldiers. Sabers of this type were used by dragoon officers, symbolizing their status and fighting spirit. The 1881 model was modernized in 1909, receiving new improvements in design and materials. The blade of the saber is made from high-quality steel, ensuring its strength and durability. The grip is ergonomically designed for comfortable handling during combat. This saber is an important artifact reflecting the military history and craftsmanship of weapon makers of that era.
