✨ Dutch dirk for cadets and midshipmen, model 1888, manufacturer Hörster Solingen – a fine and rare example of naval weaponry from the late 19th century. This dirk was the standard weapon of young officers in the Dutch Navy, particularly cadets and midshipmen who were just beginning their military careers. Produced by the renowned Hörster Solingen company, it combines impeccable craftsmanship with elegance, making it not only a valuable collector’s item, but also an excellent investment. The blade is steel, straight, double-bladed, rhombic in cross-section, without lobes.
The blade is 3/4 decorated with etched marine ornament.
On the heel of the blade, marked with the manufacturer’s stamp “Hörster Solingen”.
The handle is made of plastic with transverse grooves, slightly tapered to the cross.
The cross is decorated with the image of an anchor, the ends of the cross are made in the form of cones.
The metal device of the dirk and scabbard is made of brass, partially preserved original gilding.
The scabbard is decorated with plant ornamentation and an image of an anchor.
The 1888 model dirk was used by junior officers of the Royal Netherlands Navy, including cadets and midshipmen in training. This period for the Dutch navy was a time of change and modernization as the empire sought to maintain its colonial possessions. Naval dirks such as this one played an important role in the education of young officers, serving as a symbol of discipline, honor, and devotion to naval traditions.
The dirk was carried on two hangers, each of which was a double length of gilded chain, which was fastened to the dirk with carabiners. The other ends were attached to a narrow leather belt with rings, the front ring also had a hook to secure it. At first both chains were of standard length, but over time they became much longer, especially the lower or rear chain.
Hörster Solingen is one of the most famous manufacturers of edged weapons in Germany, whose products have always been characterized by high quality workmanship and exquisite design. The company had strong ties with various armies in Europe and supplied weapons to many countries, including the Netherlands. Hörster products were known for their reliability and durability, making them popular with the military.
Many of these dirks were part of the uniform and were used not only on duty, but also at official events, ceremonies and parades. They were handed down from generation to generation, preserving the memory of service at sea.
