Yatagan (Turkish. yatağan) – a type of Ottoman cold weapon, used mainly in the XVI-XIX centuries, it was used not only in the Ottoman Empire, but also in neighboring regions such as the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Black Sea and the Middle East. Its peculiarity is a curved, wide blade without a guard, which made the weapon versatile for chopping and stabbing blows, as well as cutting. Yatagans became especially popular among the elite warriors of the Ottoman Empire – the Janissaries, who were the main striking force of the army.
Yatagans were used extensively in numerous Ottoman battles in the Balkans, Europe and the Middle East. Their durability and effectiveness made them the weapon of choice for Ottoman infantry.
Cossacks, like the vast majority of European warriors of that time, favored curved or straight blades. Yatagans came to the Zaporozhian Cossacks as trophies after successful campaigns. In the times of the Zaduna Sich, yatagans became more widespread among the Zaduna Zaporozhye who were in the military service of the Ottoman sultans.
This specimen is particularly valuable because of the title “Bese” inscribed across the tugra, a symbol that represented authority and the right to use arms.
The title “Bese” was one of the important ranks in the hierarchy of the Ottoman Empire, associated with military and administrative duties. The presence of such a title on a yataghan indicates the high importance of the weapon and its owner.
In addition, this yatagan has a special value for Ukrainian collectors, because among the Janissaries were Ukrainians, who were famous for their bravery and military prowess. This rare specimen can become not only a part of your collection, but also a symbol of Ukraine’s military heritage and history.
Separate samples of yatagans are kept in museums of Zaporozhye, Kyiv and other cities.
