The Edo period marked the flowering of Japanese culture, arts and crafts. It was a period of relative stability and isolation of Japan, which allowed craftsmen to perfect their art. Wakizashi, as part of traditional Japanese weaponry, played an important role in samurai culture. This short sword was used as an auxiliary weapon paired with a katana and symbolized the honor and dignity of a samurai.

Master Kawashi-no Kami Fujiwara Kunisuke was one of the recognized masters of his time. His works were distinguished by a unique tempering technique, which created an expressive hamon (tempering line), as well as the use of decorative elements that gave the weapon artistic value.
