![]() An example of a Luftwaffe officer’s uniform. |
The Luftwaffe Offiziersdolch (Zweites Modell) was officially introduced in mid-1937 as a ceremonial weapon for officers of the Third Reich Air Force. This model replaced the earlier 1935 model and differed both visually and technically.
The main external difference is the guarde with spread wings and a relief emblem of the Luftwaffe: an eagle with a swastika in its paws. This emblem symbolized the power, air and military strength of the new German aviation. The shape of the hilt head was also changed – it became round, with a characteristic fluting, which made the dirk visually more massive and expressive.
The dirk was worn by Luftwaffe officers only in non-combat conditions: at ceremonial events, officers’ receptions, during parade service. At the same time to the dirk was necessarily relied on a lanyard, which was fastened with a special knot – it was a symbol of not only status, but also the correct observance of the uniform regulations.
