Historical Background:

Introduced in 1935, the Luftwaffe officers’ dirks became a symbol of prestige, discipline and belonging to one of the most powerful branches of the Third Reich. They were part of the ceremonial uniform and were used in ceremonies and parades. First model dirks were made by famous manufacturers such as Puma and Eickhorn. This type of weapon has a distinctive finish: a yellow bakelite handle decorated with aluminum braiding, and a stainless steel blade with engraved and authentic manufacturer’s markings.

The first examples had melchior parts with a thin layer of silver anodization, later polished aluminum with a thicker layer of anodization was used. Gilded swastikas on the tip and cross emphasized the status of the owner. The handles and scabbards were covered with blue Moroccan leather, which gave them elegance. The pendant was made of a chain of nickel or aluminum rings.

With the introduction of the second model in 1937, the first model remained in use by junior commanders and pilots. After 1938, production became more economical, using aluminum and lacquered steel. Despite the changes in production, these dirks remained a valuable collector’s artifact.

In particular, the examples from Puma, preserved in excellent condition, have become not only historical artifacts, but also a profitable investment for collectors. Production of dirks was discontinued in December 1944, and today they remain a symbol of one of the most famous eras in history.
