Historical reference:

The Knights Templar is an international philanthropic knightly order affiliated with Freemasonry. Unlike the initial degrees presented in the Masonic Lodge, which require only a belief in a Supreme Being, regardless of religious affiliation, the Knights Templar is one of several additional Masonic orders whose membership is open only to Masons who prefer the Christian faith.
One of the oaths of the order’s members is a mandatory declaration that they will in the future protect and defend the Christian faith. The full name of this order is the United Religious, Military and Masonic Orders of the Temple and St. John of Jerusalem, Palestine, Rhodes and Malta. The word united in this name indicates that more than one historical tradition and more than one actual order are jointly controlled within this system. Orders are united within this system: Knights of the Temple (Templars), Knights of Malta, Knights of St. Paul, and only within the framework of the York Charter – Knights of the Red Cross. The Order took its name from the historical Templars, but does not claim direct descent from the original source of the Knights Templar.
