Romanian officer’s army dirk of 1968 is a unique example of edged weapons from the times of socialist Romania, reflecting the military tradition and style of the era. The dirk served as a symbol of status and prestige for officers of the Romanian army during the reign of Nicolae Ceausescu. Masterfully crafted from quality materials, it reflects the strict features of military discipline and is part of the ceremonial uniform. This artifact is a real find for the antique weapons collector, especially if you are interested in the Cold War period. ⚔️

The handle is made of plastic imitating mother-of-pearl, has a barrel shape and a chamfered rectangular cross-section. The upper and lower parts are finished with conical sleeves, and on the lower sleeve there is a locking button, which ensures a secure fit of the dirk in the scabbard. The blade is secured by a rectangular nut with a round button on the shank of the blade.

The crossbar is straight and flat, made of polished brass. Its ends are smoothly twisted in different directions, which gives the dirk elegance.

The blade, made of nickel-plated steel, has a rhombic cross-section and double-sided sharpening, which makes it practical and functional. It is not decorated in any way, which emphasizes its austere and restrained appearance.

The heel of the blade is stamped with the serial number 55719.

The scabbard is made of brass and covered with gilding, has a smooth surface, which gives it a noble look. The device of the scabbard consists of two nuts, decorated with a relief plant ornament and hanging rings for the belts of the harness. Between the nuts, in a decorative cartouche, there is a relief image of the coat of arms of the Socialist Republic of Romania.

Historical Background:

The Romanian officer’s dirk of 1968 was developed during the reign of Nicolae Ceausescu, when the Romanian army became an important element of the state structure. The dirk became part of the ceremonial uniform of officers and symbolized a new era in the army, which played a key role in strengthening national identity and independence.

This dirk appeared during the Cold War, when Romania, although still an ally of the USSR, began to pursue a more independent foreign policy. The army in the country became a symbol of national pride, and the dirk emphasized the status of officers, who were the backbone of state power.

The 1968 dirk is characterized by a straight stainless steel blade and a hilt decorated with national symbols. The design combines functionality and elegance, reflecting the austere aesthetics of the socialist era. It was used not only as a military instrument, but also as part of official ceremonies, particularly during state parades and awards.

The dirk was an important symbol in the Romanian army, demonstrating not only military power but also national sovereignty. The officers who carried it represented a new generation of military leaders dedicated to the defense of their state in times of geopolitical instability.
