Historical background

Ancient weapons are one of the oldest and most widespread types of cold weapons. It is based on a simple construction: a wooden shaft and a metal tip mounted on it. At the bottom, the shaft was reinforced with an iron buttstock, which was used as a stop and for balancing the weapon at great length.

Until the beginning of the XVIII century spears and pikes were actively used in the Russian infantry. Their spread was due to the imperfection of firearms – long charge, lack of bayonets. However, with the development of bayonet weapons, pikes began to disappear from the arsenal of regular infantry, although there were pikiner regiments in the Ural Cossack army until the end of the XVIII century.

Halberds are first mentioned in the RIA in 1605, where they were used as ceremonial weapons of the royal guards. In the 18th century they became an attribute of non-commissioned officers in the infantry and artillery, gradually giving way to other types. By 1811 halberds were finally withdrawn from service.

The protazan came to Russia in the 17th century and served as a distinguishing sign of officers. The evolutionary continuation of this tradition was the esponton, an officer’s weapon on a shaft, which appeared in the Russian army in 1731. It had no combat value, but served as an insignia, a command tool in formation and in battle.

By 1807, the espiontons were finally discontinued. Today, such items are extremely rare and highly prized by collectors as historical symbols.
