Swiss sabers strike in a different way than Oriental sabers. Despite the considerable length of the blade, often exceeding 900 mm, the weight of the hilt causes the center of gravity to be shifted towards the guard (about 100 mm).

This weight distribution is characteristic of combat swords, for which it is essential to execute contours with the end of the weapon. The blades have a slight circular curvature and a similar cross-section: flat with a single lob.

The handles are designed like swords, using S-shaped guard shackles, side horizontal bars, “donkey horseshoe” bars, openwork shields, and straight handles. An element peculiar to sabers is the ring-shaped palyuhi, which allow for a sudden blow with the pressure of the thumb. The tops often end with a lion’s head to give weight to the hilt.

The Swiss sabers discussed in this paper could only serve in mounted combat due to their considerable length. They usually have good weight distribution for executing dissecting swinging strokes from the shoulder, as well as for swinging cleaver strokes from the elbow (at close range). Thumb pressure on the palyuh gives a quick change of direction to the strike.

Functional analysis of this group of sabers reveals some similarities with the design of Polish sabers, namely the blade profile, the position of the center of gravity and weight distribution, and the protection of the hand.
