While Ukraine was part of the USSR, it did not have its own national armed forces. All weapons were supplied by Russian factories or enterprises located on the territory of Ukraine. Despite the declaration of independence of the USSR on August 24, 1991, daggers for graduates of military schools were supplied to the Russian Bulat plant (Zlatoust) until 1992.
In 1992, supplies stopped, and the Ukrainian armed forces were faced with the task of equipping the national army with all types of weapons, including daggers. While firearms were produced by a number of Ukrainian factories, bladed weapons were produced only on Russian territory, and Ukraine had no traditions of its production.
In 1993, the problem of acquisition was partially solved: an audit was carried out at the ball’s warehouses and all defective or damaged copies of the old stocks of daggers were brought into more or less decent condition and sent to the troops. But the severity of the problem was not alleviated, which greatly irritated the head of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Acquisition Directorate, Major General V.I. Tsymbalyuk. He received instructions to develop a domestic dagger as soon as possible. Active work began in December 1993.
Only 500 copies need to be produced by May 1994. There was no money for the professional development of a sample, so we immediately turned to the 37 SMZ enterprise of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, where it was decided to establish the production of daggers. There, a mechanic was found, Bogdan Grigorievich Kicha, through whose efforts the first Ukrainian dirk, intended for the Ukrainian naval forces, was born.
Four versions were made, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine chose one, which was approved by order No. D-2 of January 6, 1994. Due to the rush, the dagger is a compilation of different parts of German and Russian daggers using national Ukrainian symbols. Due to the bankruptcy of 37 SMZ in 1994, only about 100 units of daggers were produced. In 1995, the Bulat-NVR enterprise produced another 400 copies. A total of 500 dirks of the 1994 model were produced. There is information that three types of dirks are currently being developed, intended for the air, naval and ground armed forces of Ukraine.
