The wakizashi (脇差) is a traditional Japanese sword that served as an auxiliary weapon of the samurai along with the katana. With a length of 30 to 60 cm, it was considerably shorter, making it convenient for use in tight quarters or in close combat where a longer sword might be less effective.
The Handachi Koshirae (半太刀拵え) design is a combination of elements of the traditional katana (Tachi) style and shorter swords such as the wakizashi. This style featured an elaborately decorated guard, hilt and scabbard, which emphasized the high status of the wielder. Handachi Koshirae emerged during the Muromachi period (1336-1573) and became popular among the samurai elite.
The wakizashi had a special symbolic meaning as the samurai’s personal weapon, which he always carried with him, even without a katana. It also played an important role during the seppuku (ritual suicide) ritual, being a key element of the samurai code of honor.
This Handachi Koshirae, with its graceful forms and rich finish, reflects the owner’s high status and membership in the military elite. The finishing of the sword demonstrates the centuries-old tradition of Japanese weaponry passed down from generation to generation.
