Historical Background:

The naval officer’s dirk, model 1924, was an integral part of the ceremonial equipment of the officers of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which existed from 1918 to 1941. After the creation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia), the new state sought to develop its own military traditions, particularly the development of uniforms and weapons for naval officers.

This dirk has become a symbol of officer’s honor and dedication to service in the Navy. It was made of the finest materials, using high quality steel for the blade and brass for decorative elements. The handle of the dirk was often decorated with national symbols that reflected the multinational composition of the state.

Dirks were officially introduced in 1924 and had obvious heredity from the 1918 Austro-Hungarian model. There were three main types of dirks with differences in the design of the scabbard:

The first type did not have the design with Neptune and trident, but was decorated with the royal coat of arms of Yugoslavia.

The second type had a decorative motif with Neptune and trident on the tip of the scabbard, and the royal coat of arms was replaced by an anchor, the symbol of naval forces.

The third type is represented by two variants: one had a black leather surface without an anchor, the other had an anchor and an enameled or leather surface.

These dirks were used by officers of the Yugoslav Navy, which was formed from the remnants of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. They played an important role in the defense of maritime borders, particularly in the Adriatic Sea, and participated in parades and maneuvers, demonstrating the power of the fleet.

Today, these dirks are not only symbols of military service, but also significant cultural artifacts that represent the historical heritage of Yugoslavia. They have a high value among collectors due to their rarity and historical significance.
