The handle (shaft) is wooden, painted in black (on the handle there are traces of life), approximately in the center of the handle on both sides are attached two empty frames, also on both sides two movable rings. At the bottom of the axe there is a pommel.
The axe is metal (with traces of use).
After the Nazis came to power, firefighting was not considered a police function, but soon after their rise to power the government attempted to centralize control over firefighting, and after 1933 most fire departments were placed under police jurisdiction.
Just after the outbreak of war in 1939, a new police department was created to better protect cities from fires caused by air raids; this unit was called the fire police (Feuerschutzpolizei). All major German cities transferred their existing fire departments to these new special police fire fighting units.
Because fire department personnel wore uniforms, a dirk was assigned to department officials to carry. Subordinates who were not authorized dirks wore a special bayonet with a wide crossguard and designed exclusively for firefighters. They also carried hand-held fire axes while on duty. These axes were later available with highly decorative engravings on the blade for ceremonial uniforms. These ornate axes were optional items for purchase, but that did not prevent them from acquiring a traditional significance comparable to an official’s dagger.
